Review- Anya has to much to do in this volume, from helping Loid to find all the bombs, to helping Yor survive her fight. Then she has to save Damian when he forgot something at home and would have gotten into trouble. Now she has a Tonitrus blot but Damian owes her BIG. Poor Loid is going to have a heart attack from her but he gets closer to Bond in this volume and they are working together to save people. I love this series and I cannot wait to read more.

The Promised Neverland, Vol. 5

Today's post is on The Promised Neverland, Vol. 5 by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu (Illustrator). It is 195 pages long and is published by Viz Media. The cover has Emma facing the read with her arms out to protect the others has they run away. As it is the fifth volume in the series, you need to have read the first four to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes dark stories with plucky children. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this volume. The story follows Emma, Ray and others as needed. As Grace Field House goes up in flames, Emma and the other children make their run for freedom. With Mom refusing to give up and an army of demons at her call, this escape from captivity won’t be easy. Just what will Emma have to sacrifice to pull it off…?

Review- The children make their escape safely and now are in the outside world. Emma and Ray knew that it would be dangerous but the dangers surpass their guesses. But the children have good heads and have been training for this, so they are as ready as they can be. It feels like the real story is starting now with the children in the real world and facing it's dangers. In addition they are still being hunted by the demons from Grace Field House, who do not like to lose their future meals. I am very curious about the world outside of the walls and what the children are going to find there.

Spy x Family, Vol. 8

From the back of the manga- Yor is assigned to be a bodyguard for a mafia family on a cruise ship by the secret organization Garden. But with Lloyd and Anya also on board thanks to a giveaway they won, Yor is starting to have doubts about her secret life as an assassin…

Review- This volume has two main stories, Yor protecting a mother and child, and Loid and Anya trying to have a 'normal' vacation. Loid is really trying to be a father on this trip not a spy but he is not doing well. Anya wants to have more adventures and knows that Yor is having them. One big thing that happens in this volume, is that we learn why Yor does this job. She wants to protect the innocent lives around her, so she pushes herself harder for the greater good. The last third of the volume is an action scene with Yor and it is fun to see what she can really do. I look forward to the next volume and seeing what is going to happen next!

Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 5

From the back of the manga- William James Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes meet again on a train back to London, and a dead body is discovered in a locked passenger cabin. With John Watson named as the prime suspect, Sherlock challenges Moriarty to a contest of who can solve the murder first. Will Sherlock be able to clear Watson’s name? Back in London, a state secret that only the royal family is privy to has been stolen and MI6 is tasked with retrieving it, lest the whole empire fall into ruin! Meanwhile, Sherlock is visited by the king of Bohemia, who asks him to cover up a recent scandal…

Review- The volume starts with a locked room mystery and Watson is the one blamed for the murder. Sherlock and James both know that he is innocent and they make a bet about who can prove it first. Then we jump into the re-telling of Scandal in Bohemia and Irene Alder. She is wonderful and unsettles Sherlock so well. I like spending half time with Moriarty and half with Sherlock. It's fun to see how Moriarty's plans influence what cases Sherlock has and how Sherlock solves the cases, impresses Moriarty. Good manga and I look forward to the next volume.

From the back of the manga- In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Finding themselves at a crossroads, the brothers seek the guidance of a teacher, but her lessons are harder to master than any alchemy.

Review- This volume is a lynch point volume. The reader gets a lot background for Ed and Al. We see everything that happened from their childhood and how brilliant Ed has always been. The main plot is paused for this volume but for this background that is fine. The reader not only seeing Ed and Al from a younger age, we see others in the cast, like Mustang and King Bradley. But most importantly, we see The Truth. It is very important for plot and character development and I cannot wait to see how this is going to play out in the end. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next volume.

Review- This volume is about one of Moriarty's men and it is very interesting to see his background and what made him join Moriarty. I like seeing this story lines that focus on Moriarty's men and why they would join him and do things that will be seen as bad. Moran is shown to be both a good agent and a good leader. But of course Moriarty knows who he chose to join him on the quest. I hope that we see Holmes in the next volume but this was a good volume.

From the back of the manga- Life at Grace Field House is good for Emma and her fellow orphans. While the daily studying and exams they have to take are tough, their loving caretaker provides them with delicious food and plenty of playtime. But perhaps not everything is as it seems…
Just as the plan to escape the orphanage is coming together, Mom viciously breaks Emma's leg and reveals that Norman's days are numbered. Emma and Ray will do anything to save their friend from being eaten by the demons, but can they outsmart their devious foe?

Review- With the escape plans to close, the plot is getting more intense. Mom is on to them and she knows that Emma wants to save everyone. So Mom makes the first move by breaking Emma's leg and moving Norman's due date up. By doing these things, Mom hopes to trap the children in despair and stop them from making different plans. But Ray and Emma will not be stopped so easily. This series just keeping getting better with how intense the plot and the ticking clock behind our characters. There is a good cliffhanger in the volume, so I am very excited to read what is going to happen next.

As it is the third in the series, you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes re-imagining of classic characters and mysteries. Review- Sherlock has gained Moriarty's attention and Moriarty wants to test Sherlock's mettle. So watching from behind the scenes, Moriarty and his brothers want to see what Sherlock will do to get the information he needs. This volume was fun with Sherlock dealing with being wrongfully accused of murder and then dealing with his new celebrity from John's writing. Moriarty clan have big plans both for themselves and for Sherlock. I look forward to seeing my favorite stories from a new light.

It is the fifth in the series, you need to have read the first four volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes retelling stories and clever plots. With the help of Marion and Nico the homunculus, Johanna reaches the great belfry where Mephistopheles' head is kept. Johanna is nearly finished with the century-long game she's played with her demonic companion, but with Johanna's body slowly shrinking away and the church stopping at nothing to prevent her unholy reunion, will she accomplish her goal before it's too late?

Review- A interesting ending for a good series. Faust does get to Mephistopheles' head before the end of the one hundred years. What they were really playing at is never explained but in the end, that is not what really matters. What really matters is how Faust lived in those years. The lives she touched, the research she helped, and the guidance she gave, in particular to Marion. I would have liked to know more about demons and what Faust was really going after but I am still satisfied with the end.

In the search to get their bodies back, the duo unwittingly sets in motion sinister mechanisms that spell disaster for one of their friends.

Review- Ed and Al now have the attention of the Homunculi but that is still unknown. The plot is starting to move but where the journey is going is still a mystery. Ed and Al have good relationship growth in this volume with Al confronting his fear that he is not real, only made of memories from Ed. Ed is also showing his real feelings about what has happened to them and how he blames himself for everything. But then more tragedy hits with the dead of friend by the homunculus. Also Roy reveals what his plans are and why he joined the State Alchemists. So much is going on but Arakawa handles it so well that the reader knows where they are and what is going on. I look forward to seeing what is going on next.

In order to escape the orphanage where they are being raised as food for demons, Emma, Norman and Ray begin recruiting allies. But convincing the other children to believe them may not be an easy task. 

Review- This volume is very tense with the adults both moving, against the children and each other. Sister Krone wants to be a mom and she knows that the children are planning to escape. So she proposes a alliance, help for the children to escape and help to bring down mom Isabelle. Of course nothing goes as planned with Sister Krone giving her life to help the children in some mysterious way and mom Isabelle saying that Norman's day is here. The tension is getting greater as the children are very aware of time running out for them and they still know so little about the outside world. I hope that we get the escape soon because Grace Field House is just getting more dangerous for everyone, even Isabelle.

After a surprise reappearance by a recently defeated demon, Johanna and her companions find themselves under attack. The demon Ino has been ordered to capture Dr. Faust, and this time, nothing will stop Ino from accomplishing her goal. Soon, Johanna finds herself in the heart of enemy territory, but the Doctor's smirk as she faces her captors seems to suggest that the series of events leading to defeat may have all been according to plan...

Review- We start with Faust and co. running from trouble and into the demon Ino. Faust gets taken into the cathedral where Mephistopheles' head is. But she is very hurt and passes out. Then we get to see more of her past as she remembers in her dreams. Everything is starting to wrap up with all the threads coming together, from who is pulling Ino's strings to what really happened to Faust.  Faust is no fool, she knows that she is running out of time and she is willing to do whatever is takes. The art continues to be wonderful and a wonderful addition to the story telling. I am looking forward to seeing how everything ends.

As it is the second volume in the series, you need to have read the first volume. The intended reader is someone who likes shonen manga, adventure stories, and funny heroes. Review- This volume picks up right where the last volume ended with Ed facing a mystery man, who destroyed his metal arm. But Ed and Al are saved by other state alchemists and the man is revealed to a war survivor named Scar. He kills alchemists and he is hunting in the main city. This volume has a good piece about the past and what happened to Ed and Al after and they discover what a sorcerer's stone really is and how to make one. We get to see more of other state alchemists and why alchemists are disliked in the world. The worldbuilding is starting to get strong and the reader is getting a feel for the place that Ed and Al have. I am excited to read what is going to happened to them next!

From the back of the book- After successfully establishing a foothold in Durham and cleansing the city of some of its corruption, William James Moriarty sets his sights on London. To make headway there, he needs the aid of his brother Albert. But while on his way to London, William is kidnapped by a gang of criminals! Will Albert be able to save him in time?

Review- This volume has a lot going on from William dealing with kidnappers to bringing another corrupt nobleman down and meeting his rival Sherlock Holmes. The kidnapping plot is all planned to help get Albert into running MI6 and thus William into the heart of the government itself. The main story is dealing with nobleman, who likes to hunt and kill commoners for sport. The plot to stop him is very twisty and the reader is going to have a fun ride with it. Holmes is well done and the last chapter is following him as he meets Watson for the first time. I look forward to seeing what trouble William is going to stir up in the next volume.

As is the second in this plot heavy manga series, so you need to have read the first volume to understand the characters and story. The intended reader is someone who likes horror-fantasy manga. From the back of the book- Behind the facade of a happy orphanage, the children of Grace Field House are secretly being raised as food for demons! Determined to save themselves and the other kids, Emma, Norman, and Ray begin planning an escape. But their caretaker, "Mom," has brought in extra help to keep the orphans in line...

Review- The kids know that they are racing against time as Mom knows about their plan. They have a traitor in their group, someone who is feeding Mom information about their plans. This volume is more about Norman and Ray, building their characters and motivations. They both want to escape but only one wants to help Emma get the other children out. The new Sister Krone is pretty scary, as she is an unknown and her plans are to replace Mom herself. Mom is not too much in this volume but her shadow is over them and their plans. The reader is reminded of the ticking clock over the children's heads at the end of the volume. This was a good volume with character development and rising tension for the next shipment day. I look to reading the next volume.

Today's post is on Spy x Family, vol 7 by Tatsuya Endo. It is 200 pages long and is published by Viz Manga. The cover has Damian looking grumpy on it. As it is the seventh in the series, you need to read the first six volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who is interested in humorous spy and assassin manga. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the different characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- As Donovan Desmond is about to share a rare family moment with his son Damian, Twilight cuts in to meet his target face-to-face for the first time. Can Twilight find some way to endear himself to the inscrutable Donovan?

Review- We get to see more into Damian's life and it is very sad. I'm glad that he has Anya in his life now, even if he doesn't understand why. We travel with Damian as some of the adults in his life try to give him a more normal life and interactions. We also get to see Yor's boss and they are a mystery person who wears a mask and is starting to get worried about Yor's married life and if that family is getting in the way of Yor's job. It ends with the family going on a cruise together and that is going to be an experience for all of us.

As it is the third volume in the series, you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes reimagining classic folk tales. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person perspective as moving as the story does. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

Mephistopheles's right leg has been found, and it turns out that a member of the church has been using the leg's blood for nefarious purposes! But behind the scenes lurks another demon. Now Johanna must thrust herself into battle to stop a girl who is no longer among the truly living... Will Johanna and her cohorts retrieve her demon's limb unscathed, or will they become dinner for the undead?

Review- The first story is dealing with the little girl turned demon and getting the right leg back. Then the reader follows Johanna and friends as they travel to the city of Athens where Johanna made her daughter, to get help for her. The rest of the volume is the story of how Johanna made Nico and what happened when she was discovered. Plus the reader meets one of Johanna's friends who has a demon problem of her own. It is very interesting and nice to see Johanna in school and seeing what trouble she got into as she traveled and learned. The church is involved with the demons somehow and I hope that we get some clarity about it before the manga ends in two volumes.

Today’s post is on Spy x Family, Vol. 6 by Tatsuya Endo.  It is 250 pages long and is published by Viz Media. The cover is an illustration of Nightfall who works with Twilight. As it is the sixth in the series, you need to have read the first five volumes to understand the story. There is no foul language, no sex, and comedic violence in this book. The intended reader is someone who likes humorous spy stories. The story follows the main character, Twilight. There Be Spoilers Ahead. 

From the back of the book-  Twilight and Nightfall enter an underground tennis tournament, hoping for an opportunity to obtain an intelligence document that threatens to bring the world to the brink of war! But will their mission be compromised by Nightfall’s secret crush on Twilight?!

Review- This volume is really mostly about the underground tennis games and it is over the top. With tricks and cheats from the other players, Twilight and Nightfall are having a hard time of it but it was a fun volume. Nightfall is not handling Twilight having a family ‘life’ without her in it very well and in fact almost gets herself injured from playing against Yor later in the volume. Twilight is clueless to her feelings for him, his beginning feelings for Yor, and Yor has no idea what she feels about any of this. Anya gets into some trouble with Damian but he is starting to see her in a new light. A very fun series that has me looking forward to the next volume eagerly.

As it is the fifth in the series, you need to have read the first four volumes to understand what is going on. The intended reader is someone who likes spies and comedy manga. Despite the setbacks, Anya is determined to gain access to the Desmonds’ inner circle and even devises a new plan—acing her midterm exams to earn stella stars! Can the academically challenged Anya pull off this feat for the sake of world peace?

Review- Lots of different stories in this volume from meeting a spy for hire who is very bad at his job to meeting Nightfall, another agent who works with Loid and is in love with him. Our core four are great with Yor trying to learn to cook and still making people ill to Anya trying and failing to become friends with Damian. There is not much movement of the plot, this volume is more about character development and introducing new characters. We get to see some of Damian’s private life and see what pressure he is living under. Anya is still the best and I think that she is starting to work on Damian. Next volume I think is going to be more spy centric and I am looking forward to it. 

I give this book a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I borrowed this book from my local library. 

Spy x Family, vol. 4

Today’s post is on Spy x Family, vol. 4 by Tatsuya Endo. It is 192 pages long and is published by Viz Media. The cover is gray with a white dog in a chair in the center. As it is the fourth volume in the series you need to have read the first three volumes of the series to understand the story. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main characters, moving as the story needs. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- The Forgers look into adding a dog to their family, but this is no easy task—especially when Twilight has to simultaneously foil an assassination plot against a foreign minister! The perpetrators plan to use trained dogs for the attack, but Twilight gets some unexpected help to stop these terrorists.

Review- We get a volume long story in this one with a plot to assassinate a minister and the whole family gets involved. Loid is working to stop it, Yor is trying to manage Anya, who just wants to find a dog and she finds a great one. The dog, Bond can see the future and Anya can read his mind when he does that and together they secretly save the day. There is so much going on in this volume plot wise but I had a really good time reading it. I liked seeing Loid doing his thing, Anya getting into trouble and saving the day, and Yor kicking people in the face.  I look forward to seeing Anya and Bond get into trouble together.
