Review- A very cute story about first love. Eriko or Ellie, just a normal high schooler but she wants more and the more she wants is love. But pretending to have a boyfriend is more fun until she gets called out. So of course she lies. But when the boy she is lying about finds out, Ellie has to deal with him. He is not that bad, just a kid who wants to be left alone. Together they have to come to an understanding and start working towards each other. Very cute and I'm looking forward to seeing Ellie and Ohmi grow together.

Tomie

Today's manga post is on Tomie by Junji Ito. It is 750 pages long and is published by Viz Media. The cover is black with a silhouette in white lines and a blood drop in the center. The intended reader is someone who likes horror manga. There is some mild foul language, implied sex, and violence in this manga. The stories follow different characters has they interact with Tomie. From the back of the manga- Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye. She can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself. While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus. But soon they realize that no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie.

Review- This was the manga that made Junji Ito famous and for good reason. Ito really leans into the surreal with this story. Tomie is like a force of nature, she is unknowable, un-understandable, and unstoppable. She wants what she wants and she will use anyone and do anything to get it. The art is incredible at conveying the horror of undying, evil being of inhuman desires. I would recommend this manga for all manga readers and horror readers for an experience that you will never forget.

Yakuza Lover, Vol. 6

Today's post is on Yakuza Lover, Vol. 6 by Nozomi Mino. It is 170 pages and is published by Viz Media. The cover has Yuri and Oya on it wrapped in an embrace. As it is the sixth volume in the series, you need to have read the first five volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes mob romances and over the top plot lines. Later, the Oya syndicate packs the banquet hall to celebrate their underboss’s birthday. When Oya sees how beautiful and nervous Yuri is, he decides he wants her all to himself and proposes a competition! Meanwhile, Jin, a man from Yuri’s past, suddenly appears—and it turns out he’s an organized crime detective!

Review- Oya is drugged from the end of the previous volume and he needs Yuri to help him. So they have sex and after Yuri thinks about much she has grown over the course of their relationship. Before she would have confronted the woman who drugged Oya but now all her attention is on him and his needs. But their time is short and Yuri has to deal with an old friend, who wants to be more. The plot is pretty good in this volume, with Yuri having to fight for her love and learn to blend in more with Oya's men. This is series is fun if you like mafia/mob romances with the drama and ridiculous plots. More drama soon!

The Dragon Knight's Beloved, Vol. 3

The safety of the wild dragons, especially the newborn king of dragons, is Melissa’s biggest concern. Any cry for help plays into Eleanor’s and the poachers’ plans. Hubert and the Dragon Knight Corps need to act quickly to save her before she is used against all the dragons in the valley!

Review- The manga starts with Melissa trying to get away and stop the dragons from panicking and destroying everything around them. The poacher's were using Eleanor for their own reasons and she is crushed by the betrayal. After Melissa is rescued, she has to deal with realizing that Herburt is serious about marrying her because the blue dragon has boned with her. I hope that we stop getting into the politics of dragons and their impact on the world around them. With how powerful dragons are, the empire wants more control of them and that puts Hubert and Melissa into their line of sight. A good volume but I want more from the plot, so I am curious about what's going to happen next.

Tomie

Today's manga post is on Tomie by Junji Ito. It is 750 pages long and is published by Viz Media. The cover is black with white lines outlining Tomie with a red blood drop in the center. The intended reader is someone who likes horror on a cosmic scale. There is mild foul language, mild sexuality, and lots of violence. The story's perspective changes with every chapter has it is really a string of short stories around Tomie and what she does. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

Review- A interesting collection from Ito where the reader follows different people over the course of many years and their interactions with Tomie. Tomie is not just a beautiful woman, she is something much more dangerous and evil. She drives people mad and she enjoys the madness. The art is good with the horror that follows Tomie's every step on every page. The reader is drawn to Tomie, just like the characters, into her mystery and her desire for horror and blood. I would have liked more information about Tomie herself, like has she always been around or was she a normal person once? I know that some readers like the total mystery of Tomie but I wanted more about her. Maybe that was Ito's plan, if so then it worked on me. I would recommend this manga to horror fans and of course, fans of Ito.

Spy x Family, Vol. 9

 

Today's manga post is on Spy x Family, Vol. 9 by Tatsuya Endo. It is 192 pages long and is published by Viz Media. The cover has Becky on it with her sheep. As it is the ninth in the series, you need to have read the first eight volumes to understand the story. There is no foul language, no sex, and action violence in this series. The intended reader is someone who likes spy stories, over the top action and silliness. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the manga- Yor’s on assignment and finds herself up against a gang of assassins on board a luxury cruiser. Meanwhile, Loid and Anya each discover that bombs have been planted throughout the ship! Will their best efforts be enough to save the vessel?

Review- Anya has to much to do in this volume, from helping Loid to find all the bombs, to helping Yor survive her fight. Then she has to save Damian when he forgot something at home and would have gotten into trouble. Now she has a Tonitrus blot but Damian owes her BIG. Poor Loid is going to have a heart attack from her but he gets closer to Bond in this volume and they are working together to save people. I love this series and I cannot wait to read more.

The cover has Emma facing the read with her arms out to protect the others has they run away. As it is the fifth volume in the series, you need to have read the first four to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes dark stories with plucky children. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this volume. The story follows Emma, Ray and others as needed. Review- The children make their escape safely and now are in the outside world. Emma and Ray knew that it would be dangerous but the dangers surpass their guesses. But the children have good heads and have been training for this, so they are as ready as they can be. It feels like the real story is starting now with the children in the real world and facing it's dangers. In addition they are still being hunted by the demons from Grace Field House, who do not like to lose their future meals. I am very curious about the world outside of the walls and what the children are going to find there.

Daytime Shooting Star, Vol. 10

Today's post is on Daytime Shooting Star, Vol. 10 by Mika Yamamori. It is 200 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has Suzume and Mamura on it. As it is the tenth in the series, you need to have read the first nine volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes high love stories and coming of age stories. From the back of the manga- Suzume has moved to Tokyo and is living with her uncle. Mamura’s sudden confession of love leaves Suzume’s head spinning. After spending the entire night agonizing over how to respond to him, she finally decides to give Mamura a chance. But soon after she makes her choice, Mr. Shishio throws her a curveball.

Review- Suzume has decided to not only move from Mr. Shishio but to give Mamura a chance. She knows that she is partly being unfair to Mamura as she still have feelings for Mr. Shishio. But Mamura understands that a relationship is going to take time and he knows that time is on his side. But Mr. Shishio also has to deal with being dishonest about his feelings too and that is a plot point. With only one volume left, I am anxious about how the story is going to end. Suzume is really good in this volume, she is more honest with herself and Mumura. She is really putting herself out there and I am rooting for her to the finish line.

Love of Kill, Vol. 5

Review- Ryang-Ha is taken to the mysterious Donny, who seems to known the person who Ryang-Ha got his name from. The group is full of broken and dangerous people and they have questions for both Ryang-Ha and Chateau. Chateau is only getting more confused by Ryang-Ha and his actions, not that he is helping by explaining himself. This volume is mostly action with little plot or character growth but that didn't bother me as I think that this volume is setup for future growth in both plot and character. Chateau and Ryang-Ha are reunited at the end with enemies all around them and the only one they want alive is Chateau. Good hook for the next volume, so I'm looking forward to seeing what is going to happen next.

Phosphophyllite is determined to find a job more suited Cinnabar's many talents, but with no easy answers to be found on land, the quest turns seaward. But the sea is hardly the optimal environment for a gemstone—will Phos make it back to shore in one piece?

Review- Phos has the sea creature with her and is listening to what it has to say. So Phos takes it back to the sea, against the orders of sensei. She learns about the past of the planet and how the Lustrous come into being and what the Lunarians are, maybe even what they want. But the sea creature has plans for Phos and almost kills her. But Phos survives and is not afraid of continuing her quest. The philosophy in this series is starting to come into focus. Questions about humans and humanity are starting to be asked of the characters and the readers. I am very curious about where the series is going and what Phos is going to learn.

Review- Towa and Mitsuki have some good moments in this volume but the important thing in this volume is more understanding between Aya and Towa. They are both passionate players and have strong feelings for Mitsuki. Mitsuki has some important conversations with both and she gets more understanding of both boys. This series is very sweet without getting too sappy or too serious, just a nice story about young love, growing up and how sports brings people together. I look forward to the next volume.

Review- Takiko has returned and Uruki wants to marry her. But that would mean that Takiko cannot fulfill her destiny as the priestess. Because that would mean innocent people would continue to suffer, she refuses. Plus Takiko is hiding that she is dying from the Warriors, so the fate of the priestess doesn't brother her. Lots of plot happen in this volume as the story only has two more volumes after this one. Takiko finally meets Uruki's father and learns about this prophecy told upon his birth and the truth behind it. All the main actors are coming together and time is running out for the Warriors and Takiko, I look forward to seeing this all the way to the end.

As it is the third in the series,  you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes josei, urban fantasy manga. From the back of the manga- When it becomes known that Kaoruko has received the power of the Witch Queen, the Black Witxhes Coven commands Kaoruko to become a Black Witch in to control her rampaging powers. But that means an incubus will take her! Will Kaname be able to help Kaoruko and placate the coven?

Review- This volume is more focused on the relationship between Kaoruko and Kaname. To be a real Black Witch, Kaoruko can't be a virgin but she doesn't want an incubus for her first time and neither does Kaname. So Kaname does what they both want and he goes to her. So now they are lovers and that causes backlash for both. Also Kaoruko thinks like a White Witch and that makes the Black Witches very uncomfortable with her. But she is a natural with magic, so she learns how to act like a Black Witch, even if she still thinks like a White one. More drama has been hinted at and I look forward to seeing it.

From the back of the manga- After unleashing their powers to save Yona, the Four Dragons lose consciousness and collapse! Can the nation of Xing achieve peace with all this infighting threatening its foundation?

Review- The priest Gobi is making his move and is trying to kill Princess Kouren and take the Dragon Warriors hostage. Because they are so far from the castle in Kohka, they are not healing. Yona and Hak are having to balance protection and pushing for peace. Su-Won does come and things are handled peaceful to some of his advisors displeasure. The advisors also want to kill Yona and destroy or control the Dragon Warriors. The big thing in this volume is that Hak admits his feelings to Yona and in front of everyone. I like all the plot and character movement in this volume and I am hope that this continues in the future. I am looking forward to the next volume and seeing the fallout of everything from this one.

From the back of the manga- Yor is assigned to be a bodyguard for a mafia family on a cruise ship by the secret organization Garden. But with Lloyd and Anya also on board thanks to a giveaway they won, Yor is starting to have doubts about her secret life as an assassin…

Review- This volume has two main stories, Yor protecting a mother and child, and Loid and Anya trying to have a 'normal' vacation. Loid is really trying to be a father on this trip not a spy but he is not doing well. Anya wants to have more adventures and knows that Yor is having them. One big thing that happens in this volume, is that we learn why Yor does this job. She wants to protect the innocent lives around her, so she pushes herself harder for the greater good. The last third of the volume is an action scene with Yor and it is fun to see what she can really do. I look forward to the next volume and seeing what is going to happen next!

Takane & Hana, Vol. 10

As it is the tenth in the series, you need to have read the first nine volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes comedy, shojo manga. From the back of the manga- When Hana’s childhood friend Okamon confesses that he’s in love with her, Hana goes into a total panic! Can she possibly return his feelings? And once Takane finds out, all bets are off on how he’ll react to the news!

Review- Okamon's confession throws everything out of balance for Hana and Takane. She had no idea about how he felt and she has to process what she thinks and feels about him too. Takane has to think about those feelings too, as Okamon tells him too. But they fight it out and decide to continue with their relationship as it is. This volume has some serious moments but the comedy is still main focus. Hana continues to be the main force of change in this series, and she moves everything along with her. Takane is becoming more adult-like in his thinking and actions, he really considers what having this odd relationship with Hana could do to her future and he doesn't want to harm her in anyway. Good volume and I look forward to more.

From the back of the manga- Ten years ago, the Great Sickness of the Byakko Gate claimed Kyutaro’s parents, and now the ghost of his mother Toko reveals what transpired! What horrifying deal did Toko strike with the White Queen? And will Kyutaro’s love for Fumi change when he hears the truth?

Review- So much happens in this volume. The ghost of Kyutaro's mother explains what happened 10 years ago and why Fumi's memories had to be taken. The great sickness was an old evil spirit and he wants to infect people with his evil. What his other plans are, is still unknown but I'm sure that he has greater plans. But knowing what happened, has freed Fumi and Kyutaro to take action and move towards the future. Also they can finally talk about their feelings for each other. This has been my favorite volume so far and I hope that this energy will continue into the future plot.

Review- Back in her own world, Takiko tries to be normal but discovers that she has the same disease that killer her mother. So facing the fact that she is going to die either way, Takiko chooses to go back to Uruki and the Warriors. I'm not sure how I feel about that plot twist with Takiko going to die not matter what. I feel that makes her future sacrifice less emotional because there is no other way for the story to end. But I am going to see this story to the end and maybe I will feel differently.

Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 5

Review- The volume starts with a locked room mystery and Watson is the one blamed for the murder. Sherlock and James both know that he is innocent and they make a bet about who can prove it first. Then we jump into the re-telling of Scandal in Bohemia and Irene Alder. She is wonderful and unsettles Sherlock so well. I like spending half time with Moriarty and half with Sherlock. It's fun to see how Moriarty's plans influence what cases Sherlock has and how Sherlock solves the cases, impresses Moriarty. Good manga and I look forward to the next volume.

Today's manga post is on Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Vol. 4 by Yū Tomofuji. It is 192 pages long and is published by Yen Press. The cover has Sariphi and the King on the cover. As it is the fourth in the series, you need to have read the first three volumes to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes fantasy re-tellings of Beauty and the Beast with politics. There is no foul language, no sex, and mild violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of Sariphi. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the manga- Confronted with yet another challenge to prove she is worthy to become queen, Sariphi must now entertain the mysterious Duke Galois upon his visit to the palace. But will learning niceties and dance steps be enough to win over the duke, who is rumored to be a fearsome warrior with a burning hatred for all things human? Or has Sariphi been set up to fail her way out of the palace and the beast realm for good?

Review- Sariphi continues to face her challenges head-on. She has to impress a powerful Duke and he is known for his hatred of humans. Sariphi has to learn all about the palace, a special dance solo, and a special partnered dance. The King is not happy about anyone testing her but Sariphi isn't afraid and the King trusts her. Sariphi never changes who she is, even when it would be to be benefit. That's how she is heal the wounds between humans and beasts. Even when she falls, she gets back up with a smile and tries again. That is what saves this interaction and will continue to do so. A very volume and series.
